High-Tech capsules can change insulin injections one day

High-Tech capsules can change insulin injections one day (Thursday, Feb. 7, 2019 (HealthDay News) - For people with  2 type of diabetes, whenever the insulin is needed, can the days of awakening yourself with needles come? Now there is a different possibility, researchers said that a capsule has been developed which can lead to insulin when it is in the stomach. New equipment has only been tested in animals so far, and such conclusions do not always come out in humans, but scientists say the results look promising.

"If you try to give insulin verbally, acid and enzymes break the protein (in the digestive tract)," senior study author Dr. Geovani Traverso said. She is from Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston and Cambridge, MIT in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at MIT.So insulin - A hormone that helps regulate blood sugar - should be distributed by injection. Traverso said that people with type 2 diabetes often delay starting treatment with insulin because insulin injections are inconvenient and stigma.

"People will like oral passages on injection," he said.

In order to fulfill this challenge, researchers developed a capsule that contains a small needle made of compressed insulin. The capsule is about the size of a blueberry. When the device reaches the stomach, the capsule reproduces itself and injects insulin into the abdominal lining. Head writer Alex Abramson, a Ph.D. In the MIT Department of Chemical Engineering, the student said, "The system was to be self-oriented. A stomach is a big place and there is no guarantee that it will fall."Therefore, researchers borrowed "tech" from leopard turtles found in Africa. There is a high, vertical dome in the shell of the animal. If it rolls on its back, then it allows it to correct itself.

The researchers also had to ensure that the capsules had a chance to correct themselves before the injection. To accomplish this, they load the insulin needle on a compressed spring, which is kept by a sugar disk. According to Abramson, sugar disks take 5.5 minutes to dissolve. Once it dissolves, the insulin needle is injected into the abdominal lining. Researchers said there are no pain receptors in the stomach, so the injection should not get hurt. The capsule passes harmlessly through the digestive system after giving its material. Tests of pigs have shown that the device is capable of successfully delivering insulin in the same amount as people who usually take type 2 diabetes. Researchers also saw stomach tissues, where insulin was injected and there were no signs of damage or abnormalities. They also did not see how the pig changes or changes in the stool pattern.

Traverso said that the researchers will continue to use animal experiments and are expecting humans to test insulin capsules in about three years. In addition to insulin, he said that the capsule system can be used to give medicine for other diseases. Endocrinologist Dr. Minizah Sood is from Lennox Hill Hospital in New York City and was not part of the study. "This technique is something I have never imagined. So far, it has been tested only in animals, but it is a proof-of-concept study that is promising, and I'm eager to see it. How does it come to human trials, "she said."Providing oral insulin will dramatically improve the options for people with diabetes - this will be life-changing," Sood explained. At present, he said that people suffering from diabetes often have to delay seven to 10 years before starting insulin therapy. He said that the injection of insulin is one of the main reasons for this delay. The capsule system was developed by a team of researchers from MIT, Brigham and Women's Hospital and insulin producer Novo Nordisk. the study was published on February 7 in the journal Science.
