You’ve been on a diet for a few months now, yet you are still struggling to lose weight; you can’t even shed a few pounds. But you’ve done everything you were supposed to do: you lowered your calorie intake, you cut back on fatty foods and sugars, and you even eat your vegetables like your mother taught you. But you have likely done a few things wrong during your battle with healthy living. Here are three trip-ups that may be preventing you from reaching your dietary goals.

You eat even when you aren’t hungry

Sometimes we eat when we aren’t hungry, and there are several reasons why we feel the inclination to dive into a plate of food: perhaps you are depressed or bored, and you think that you have nothing else to do, so you look in the fridge and grab the leftovers or shamefully reach into the freezer for that giant tub of chocolate chip ice cream. You eat to fill something you feel is lacking, but this must be avoided. Eat your three square meals and even indulge in a few snacks throughout the day. But what you have to remember is that you should not reach into the fridge or cupboard when you are not hungry. If you are bored, angry, or depressed, try to find another activity to occupy your time and distract you from your compulsive snacking.

Your dinner is too big

For many dieters out there, dinner is the biggest meal of the day. This is because dieters do what they can to limit their calorie consumption throughout the day that by the time dinner comes around, they just want to fill their mouths with as much grub as possible. To counter this, try to have several smaller meals throughout the day rather than a regimented breakfast, lunch, and dinner. This way you won’t be starving by the evening. Another good idea is to limit your serving size. Cut your plate in half, and tell yourself that if you are still hungry by the time you finish your smaller plate, you can have seconds. But you won’t feel the need to overdo it at the dinner table, especially if your mother always told you to finish your plate. This works because your stomach takes about 30 minutes before it can realize that it is full, so before you reach for a second helping, you will have had enough time pass to notice if you are full or still hungry.

You’ve been lied to by “healthy” foods

Many items in the grocery store claim to be healthy choices, but sometimes this isn’t the case and can, in fact, result in weight gain as opposed to weight loss. Some of the biggest culprits for this are fat-free flavored yogurts (extremely high in fructose and corn syrup – also known as Diet Killers); juice cocktails (there are not nearly enough natural ingredients in these so-called juices; just a heaping helping of sugar); and frozen meals that claim to be diet-friendly (they are chockfull of sodium and preservatives). If you want to eat healthily, eat naturally; fruits, vegetables, and grains.
