It is a shame to say it, but over half of American women hate their appearance. The most common body parts loathed by women across the country are the hips, thighs, and the waist. But even with a perfect waistline and the hourglass figure, some women have always dreamed of, they are still having trouble looking at themselves in the mirror.

According to recent studies, your personal image is directly affected by how your family and friends regarded your appearance, whether they tended to criticize your looks or praise it. But although this article is not a time machine to bring you back to change your self-image, it will help you be able to look in the reflection with pride and not contempt.

Give your inner nay-sayer the boot

When you look in the mirror, instead of criticizing your reflection, praise it. You may generally look in the mirror and point out your fat hips or your love handles. You may point out the extra weight you carry in the back. This is not a good tactic; you must stay somewhat positive and complimentary, or at least remain neutral. If you look in the mirror and say, “my hips are huge!” try adding, “but I do have excellent bone structure!” Keep positive and point out at least one part of your body that you think is good (or at least not bad).

Redefine beauty

As they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. What I think is beautiful may differ from what you believe. Beauty comes in all shapes and sizes, so remember that although you may not be perfect, you still have some attractive features. Compare your less-than-perfect features with other more traditionally beautiful women. When you complain about your hips, remind yourself that the most beautiful woman in the world as Marilyn Monroe.

Be confident, even if it’s not real

We have all told someone we loved that they looked gorgeous when really they looked quite terrible. This type of flattery can be used by you. Next time you stand in front of the mirror, hold your head up high and your back straight. Tell yourself that you do rock indeed and that you are a respected and influential person. Then, leave the room in the same confident manner. Over time, you will begin to believe this, and your image will improve.

Stay grounded

Lying to yourself may help improve your image, but not on its own. You have to face reality; go to your closet and get rid of all the clothes you THINK you will fit in within a few months. It’s time to be realistic; most women exaggerate their pants size, lying so that they don’t feel so bad themselves. Try this: grab a piece of string and measure out how wide your hips are and mark it with a paper clip. Then wrap the string around your waist and mark your real waist size. Take a look at the difference and learn to love yourself for what you are not what you want to be
